Evan's Blessing

Yesterday Evan was given a name and a blessing at church. Amongst other things, Evan was blessed that, through his life, others may come closer to God and know of God's love. Some time while I was pregnant with Evan I read the story of Christ healing a blind man (John 9). The disciples and Jesus passed by a man who was blind since birth. The disciples asked Jesus who sinned--the man or his parents--and caused his blindness? Jesus says, "Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him."

I've been asked how Evan got Spina Bifida. There are still a lot of unknowns about the cause of Spina Bifida but it has often been linked to a deficiency in folic acid. The truth is I've felt a lot of guilt because I got pregnant quicker than anticipated and had just started taking prenatal vitamins. I'll never know if that is why Evan has Spina Bifida but I do know that God knows Evan and Evan is exactly who he is supposed to be. I have faith that, through Evan's challenges, others have and will continue to see miracles and draw closer to God. Evan is a little miracle.

  1. I know that it's true that our trials bring those around us closer to God. I know that you and I have very different trials, but losing our little girl so suddenly created many opportunities to share our testimony and we still find it coming up a lot. The Lord knew that you guys could handle this and that you will bless many lives. I think of you often and pray for you guys!

  2. I'm so happy for you guys. This day took a long time to come, but it happened!! I love Evan and seeing the joy he brings to those around him. I hope he will be friends with my kiddos as he grows up. And I know what you mean by the folic. You said it perfectly! Love you guys!

  3. I think Evan looks so much like your family, Jenna (especially Austin in that last picture). I see so much of you in his face. What a precious baby. And what a sweet reminder of how precious we are to the Lord.

  4. beautiful post jenna! I loved it all. I agree with you. For me, it can be easy to shift the focus of trials and challenges to thoughts such as "How could i have avoided this?" But I am seeing that as I do that, the Lord isn't allowing me to use His atonement to truly heal or change. He needs for us to need and acknowledge Him in ALL things. And so I agree with you when you see that your little Evan is no exception. He is so precious. I'm thinking of you often :)
